❓Indexing taking too long

Find out what to do when your site's indexing is taking too long.

Indexing your site is taking too long

What's happening

When you add a new domain, we crawl your site to find all the pages we should scan. This is called indexing. For most sites it takes a few minutes. For larger sites, or sites without a sitemap, it can take longer than 10 minutes, and that's when you see this message.

The fix

If you've selected auto-indexing, the fastest way to fix this is to re-add your domain using your sitemap.

A sitemap is a single file that lists every page on your site, so instead of crawling page by page, we can read the whole map at once. This usually finishes indexing in seconds instead of minutes.

How to switch to sitemap crawling

  1. Re-add your domain in the dashboard.

  2. Instead of selecting auto-indexing, use the sitemap crawling method instead

  3. Paste your sitemap URL. It's usually at yoursite.com/sitemap.xml or yoursite.com/sitemap_index.xml.

  4. Continue with the rest of the setup.

How to find your sitemap

Most websites have a sitemap automatically. Here's where to look depending on your platform:

  • WordPress with Yoast or RankMath: yoursite.com/sitemap_index.xml

  • WordPress without an SEO plugin: yoursite.com/wp-sitemap.xml

  • Shopify: yoursite.com/sitemap.xml

  • Webflow: yoursite.com/sitemap.xml (must be enabled in Site Settings)

  • Wix: yoursite.com/sitemap.xml

  • Squarespace: yoursite.com/sitemap.xml

  • Custom site: ask your dev team, or check yoursite.com/robots.txt — the sitemap is often listed there

What if I don't have a sitemap?

If your site doesn't have one, your dev team or webmaster can create one in a few minutes. Most platforms have a plugin or built-in setting for it. In the meantime, indexing will still work, it'll just take longer for large sites.

Still not working?

If indexing is still slow even with a sitemap, or you can't find your sitemap, reply to the email you received and we'll help you sort it out.
