🧐 How Is AccessibilityChecker.org different than traditional overlay/widget tools?

Updated over a week ago

AccessibilityChecker.org is often compared to “overlay” or “widget”-based accessibility tools, but it’s important to understand how and why we’re different.

☑️ AccessibilityChecker.org is not a traditional overlay

Traditional overlays are typically:

  • One-click, generic layers added to a site

  • Designed to mask accessibility issues rather than fix them

  • Often seen as a “quick fix” that does not address underlying code problems

AccessibilityChecker.org is not one of these tools in the traditional sense of the word.

Our core product focuses on reporting real accessibility issues and empowering users to fix them directly in their site’s code or through customizable processes, not by adding a generic accessibility layer that obscures issues from assistive technologies.

🦾 How our AI-assisted accessibility feature works

Our AI Remediation tool does function as an overlay in a technical sense. However, it's fundamentally different from traditional one-click widgets.

Here’s how:

User-controlled

Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all fix:

  • Users review and approve AI-generated suggestions

  • Remediation is applied based on user decisions

  • You maintain control over how fixes are delivered

Customizable and context-aware

Our overlay:

  • Understands the structure and intent of your site

  • Can be tailored to your needs and branding

  • Doesn’t inject unnecessary or generic code just to satisfy a score

Still aligned with real accessibility goals

While our AI Remediation tool may use overlay-like mechanisms, it:

  • Doesn’t replace genuine code fixes if you prefer to implement them directly

  • Enhances accessibility without hiding issues from users or assistive technologies
